What is Spanish Immersion Workshop?
SIW has programs specifically designed for young children, 6 months to 8 years old, allowing them to acquire Spanish naturally through playful interaction and entertaining full immersion (English translations are not used in class).
What types of things are done in class?
Classes are enriched by activities including songs, games, arts & crafts, story telling, snack-tivities and movement activities.
When are the classes?
The program is all year round and grouped in three 11 week sessions and a 6 week summer session. Classes are once or twice per week and are 45 min for children up to 3 1/2 years old with a parent or caregiver and 1 hour for older children. (See the Class Schedule)
Where are the classes held?
Classes are held in 5 convenient locations on Long Island. (See Locations)
Is my child too young to start learning a second language?
Studies have shown that the sooner a child starts to be consistently exposed to another language the better it is for the child's neural linguistic development. (Read Bilingual Babies article)
I've heard that a child's English will be delayed if they learn a second language at a very young age, is this true?
This is a common misconception. The truth is that learning another language at an early age typically enhances a child's English.
What do you mean 'full immersion'?
In our program only Spanish is spoken in the class. Learning is not by translation and the child learns naturally the same way they learn their native language.
Why should I have my child in a Spanish program if s/he doesn't even speak yet?
This is the best time to expose your child to another language. Even though babies are not speaking yet, they are actively absorbing and processing language. A baby has twice as many brain synapses (connections) as an adult. Neural linguistic patterns develop rapidly in young children. Because of this, with methodical and consistent exposure to any number of languages, children can learn them all simultaneously. However if these pathways are not developed and used at a young age, the window of opportunity closes forever. (See 'About Us')
Can a young child really learn Spanish if we don't speak Spanish at home?
Yes! SIW classes will give your child the basis for learning the language. While at home, they will continue to be exposed to Spanish through our class music CD giving them consistent contact with the language. Also check out the 'Learn at Home Links' page for more great ideas.

I never imagined my 18 month old would be able to learn Spanish, especially when he is just learning to speak English! But, with the immersion approach he is able to integrate Spanish and English into his vocabulary at the same time- there's no need for translation. It just comes naturally at this age! I also love the fact that Karina models ways for us, the parents, to take what our children learn in class and build on it at home.
